Curious about what 60 crazy people cycling through Africa do all day? Well, here is a typical day in the life of a Tour D’Afrique rider.
- Wake up (starving) between 5:30 - 6:00 am
- Pitch down tent
- Pack and load red box into truck
- Eat breakfast
- Try to find a bush or mound of dirt to hide behind to go the bathroom.
- Get on the bike.
- Bike
- Stop for a Snickers or Power Bar
- Bike some more
- Get to the lunch truck starving (around 10:00 am but sometimes as early as 8:30am)
- Stuff your face and complain about how much your butt hurts with the other riders
- Bike so more
- Get to camp (most often a desert camp). Starving again.
- Try to find a bush or mound of dirt to hide behind to go the bathroom
- Eat soup
- Get your red box from the truck and pitch up tent
- Have some free time to read, take pictures, sit around and talk, hike etc.
- Rider meeting for the next day
- Dinner
- Bed by 7:00 pm (yes, we’re a rowdy, exciting bunch)
Note the lack of showering or bathing…that’s reserved for special days. After cycling 100 Km plus per day and camping you do get pretty grimy and dirty. (Not a complaint btw, just an observation).
So that’s about it. We spend a good chunk of the day cycling. The rest of our time is spent either eating, hording food, organizing a little red box, recuperating, trying to find a private place to go to the bathroom, or talking about our sore bums. Yup, these are good times. Me happy.
