“Sand” was the word of the day, but what would you expect when you are riding across the African desert. We have been riding on brand new tarmac roads the past two days as smooth as a baby’s bottom, with a tailwind behind us most of the day, making for very fast rides. I hit a top speed of 63.5 km/hr on the flat today to give you an indication of the wind speed. But that wind also caused a sandstorm. So we had swirling winds pelting us with sand, but it made the landscape that much more magical, and made the ride very unique and enjoyable.
Setting up our tent in a sandstorm was a challenge. We managed to do it, but we couldn’t prevent the sand from blowing into our tent through the mesh, we basically slept in a pit. You get used to these things on the TDA; like having to get a shovel to go to the bathroom, or not showering for days. Things aren’t always ideal, things can get tough, but life is simple. I’m riding my bike, eating, sleeping, seeing Africa and its’ wonderful people. Most importantly doing all this with Maria, I’m truly loving it.
