Imagine a very long road stretched out in front of you, miles and miles of sand dunes on either side. Imagine cycling along on this road, stopping only to allow the herd of camels in front of you cross or to talk to the stranger who is cheering you on. Imagine 60 or so tents pitched in the middle of nowhere, 70 people huddled around the trucks in a vain attempt to protect themselves and their food from the blowing wind and sand. And now think of getting out of your tent in the middle of the night, looking up, in total awe, at the most beautiful and perfect starry sky you have ever seen. These were our days between Dongola and Khartoum.
As visually beautiful as it was, you were reminded of how harsh this landscape was every time the wind blew and you were pelted with sand. As a tourist merely passing through, I was more then happy to deal with the painful gusts and the sand in my soup. Living here would be very, very hard…with that said, many do.
