Seeing that we are temporarily off our bikes for a few weeks, we decided to go see the rock hewn churches of Lalibela, a Unesco world heritage sight.
The flight was, shall I say, more then a little bumpy. Imagine being on one of those “salt and pepper shaker” rides in a amusement park, toss in a Greek lady with crazy hair laughing hysterically in the back of the plane and you have our flight. Some people clutched their partners, some clutched the seats, I did what comes most naturally, and laughed hysterically. I don’t know why, I guess I just couldn’t believe how BADLY we were being tossed around. As the turbulence continued, the laughing eventually stopped and I started to…well…puke. Combine the sight and sound of me vomiting with the turbulence, and Spiros quickly followed suit. So, there we were, the two of us crouched in our seats, Spiros in a sling, each puking violently, each clutching our respective barf bags with one hand, and trying to comfort the other with the other hand. “You’ll be ok, You’ll be ok….BLAH….moan……BLAH…oh sweet Jesus…BLAHHHHH…You’ll be okay”.
Yup, pretty pathetic. Hey, a couple that pukes together, stays together. If you are wondering if we had any Gravol, the answer is a resounding “yes”. It was safely tucked away in the belly of the plane of course, but we did remember to bring it.
Lalibela, in a word, is “incredible”. It’s a must see both for its historical importance and for the incredible views. You can easily spend two or three days visiting the churches, or hiking the surrounding mountains. For future TDAers, or if you are planning a trip to Ethiopia, do NOT miss it.
