After a few more days of glorious cycling in Tanzania, we crossed the border into Malawi. I hated to say good-bye to Tanzania; the cycling and scenery were so beautiful.
We spent an extremely lazy and well deserved rest day at Chitimba beach. We could have gone for a 35 km hike, we could have gone for a run, but we were quite content to sit in the shade, eat banana pancakes and just watch the sun set over beautiful Lake Malawi.
The cycling and landscape here have been very similar to Tanzania; more vivid green hills, beautiful plateaus and quiet, winding roads. For the first time on the trip, we had serious rain showers as we cycled. The funny thing is that we had a serious climb that morning, so the rain was more refreshing then anything. There was literally a stream of water coming down the road as we cycled up the mountain. Occasionally, we would get stunning vistas of Lake Malawi below through broken clouds. Later that day, as we cycled over another ridge, there was a break in the clouds. The whole valley was illuminated with a beautiful rainbow over it. We’ve even been fortunate enough to cycle through small villages on a Sunday, passing people going to church in their Sunday best and hearing great gospel chiming out of the churches. Its bean great!
