Feeling Battered And Bruised

The past several days have been really rough. One night, Spiros developed a very high fever, accompanied with pain and sore throat. In the morning, he saw the doctor; he has an infection and was given antibiotics. Nothing too serious to worry about we thought, it should be cleared within a few days…it hasn’t. During the day, he seems much better; the fever breaks, the pain is less and we think the worse is over. At night, the high fever, chills and pain return, seemingly worse then the night before. Once again, I would be waking up Dr Luke in the middle of the night. More drugs, fanning, cold compresses, anything to keep the fever down. (Luke, I’ll say it again, thank you for all your help!).

He obviously hasn’t been able to ride and we’ve spent a few extra days in Lusaka where there is a clinic. He’s taken fistfuls of pills, we’ve seen more doctors and, as a precautionary measure, he’s had two malaria tests (thankfully both negative). The diagnosis hasn’t changed and the infection is healing; it’s just taking much longer then expected. He desperately wants to finish what we started (the TDA), but we are not willing to jeopardize his long term health. If things don’t improve shortly, we will have to make a decision and possibly leave the tour.

Between the sleepless nights and the roller coaster of thinking the worse is over only for the fever and pain to return a few hours later, we are feeling rather battered and bruised right now. A little “soccer punched” to be honest. Hadn’t we JUST gone through something like this a few weeks ago?

So, here we are; tired, drained and once again facing the possibility of having to leave the tour….Okay. We’ll know in a few days.
