Zambia and Victoria Falls

Vic FallsUnfortunately, due to my illness, we only cycled about 3 out of the 7 cycling days in Zambia. What we did get to see was gentle rolling hills, occasional sunflower fields, some of the best roads we’ve seen lately, some of the worst roads we have seen (potholes the size of dried up lakes that could easily swallow up a cyclist or small car), scattered villages and very friendly people.

We spent 4 days in Lusaka due to my illness Lusaka was a surprisingly modern city; huge shopping malls, franchises, cinemas and western style restaurants; a stark contrast to the country side. From the people at the clinic to the people at the hotel, everyone was extremely nice and really went out of there way to help us.

We then took a bus ride to Livingston to meet up with the rest of the tour again. Livingston is the adrenalin capital of Zambia. You can see Victoria Falls, raft the Zambezi River, take helicopter rides, bungee jump etc. We didn’t bungee jump, personally I don’t see any good reason to through myself off a perfectly good bridge. I may however, reconsider my decision if the Amazing Race ever accepts Canadians.

Victoria FallsWe went to see Victoria Falls. Unbelievable! You get drenched from the mist in mere seconds. You have to see it to believe it. Later in the day, we took a helicopter ride over the area. Absolutely spectacular. Walking along the falls and getting drenched is an absolute must, but you really don’t get a sense of how massive and impressive the whole area is until you see it from above. The helicopter also took us into the Bakota Gorge. It was very cool flying only a few feet above the roaring river below and banking left and right along the gorge. If you are traveling in this area, Livingston and the myriad of activities is a must.

We had a very short stay in Zambia, too short. We would love to come back one day. Pictures have been added to the gallery.
