Early this morning, as Maria and I were cycling along heading toward the coast, the police stopped us. I assumed they were just interested in our journey. On the contrary, they told us that a permit had not been issued to the TDA for us to be cycling on this road. If we continued, we could be arrested. Okay…slight problem!
So, we got off our bikes and waited. Within a few minutes, a few other riders joined us. We weren’t sure how long it would take to obtain the required permits, so we weighed our options. We could go back…we could sit here…or, wait a minute, what’s this? …A winery! Lucky for us, we had been stopped right at the entrance of Stoumann’s winery. After thinking about it for all of 2 seconds, off we all went to the winery. The owner was extremely nice and gave us a tour of the estate. We cycled through the vinyard, got to taste some excellent wine and Maria got to ride on the grape harvest machine. What a treat! By the time we finished, we could see cyclists on the road. The TDA had sorted out the issues with the permit and we could continue on.
Had there been no problem with the permit, it would have just been a regular day. Just goes to show you how unexpected setbacks can sometimes become pleasant surprises.
