We’re in bella Italia!! After climbing the pass, we cycled almost entirely on bike paths, eventually making our way to the Dolomites of Italy. Aaaahh Italy! What beautiful images spring to mind: old men sipping grappa, people talking with their hands, the hills of Tuscany, the gondolas of Venice and of course, most importantly, mounds of penne arrabiata, gnocchi alla gorgonzola and foccacia con patate. Mmmmmm…foccacia con patate. We had a foccacia con potate in Cinque Terre eight years ago that we still talk about today. Okay, okay. I’m not suggesting that the food is more impressive then the Colosseum, just that it is most appreciated with a tiramisu gelato in hand.
We’re in the town of Cortina D’Ampezzo. Spiros found a gourmet deli shop with a melanzane alla parmigiana that can bring tears to your eyes, so I think we’ll be basing ourselves here for a few days and doing day rides. Let’s hope there isn’t a repeat of the whole Manoushes travesty. That would be bad. Remember that great scene in the movie Chocolat where the mayor breaks into La Chocolaterie; they find him in the morning passed out in the shop window, lying in a plate of truffles, face and hands covered in chocolate? Well, we’re really not above that sort of thing.
Time to go to sleep; tomorrow brings more passes.
